Rangia was named by Des Moulins (1832) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Mactrinae by Vokes (1980); to Mactridae by Ward and Blackwelder (1987); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rangiidae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
