Orcini was named by Wagner (1846). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Post and Kompanje (2010).
It was reranked as the subfamily Orcinae by Brandt (1873) and Brandt (1874); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Globicephalinae by Barnes et al. (1985); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Delphinidae by Rice (1998) and Mead and Brownell (2005); it was reranked as the subfamily Orcininae by Fraser and Purves (1960), Kasuya (1973), McKenna and Bell (1997), LeDuc et al. (1999), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Buchholtz and Schur (2004), Bianucci (2005), Bianucci and Landini (2007), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008), Foekens (2008), Post and Kompanje (2010) and Perrin et al. (2013).
It was assigned to Holodontidae by Brandt (1873) and Brandt (1874); and to Delphinidae by Wagner (1846), Fraser and Purves (1960), Kasuya (1973), McKenna and Bell (1997), LeDuc et al.
