Termes was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Termitinae.

It was assigned to Pedestria by Scopoli (1763); to Aptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Müller (1764), Schaeffer (1766), Linnaeus (1767), Müller (1776); to Neuroptera by Latreille (1794), Latreille (1796); to Termitina by Latreille (1802); to Termitidae by Heer (1849), Carpenter (1992); and to Termitinae by Nel and Paicheler (1993), Krishna and Grimaldi (2009), Krishna et al. (2013), Hellemans et al. (2024).
