Bathyocos was named by Sundberg (1994) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1089]. Its type is Bathyocos housensis.

It was assigned to Ptychopariina by Sundberg (1994); to Ptychopariidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
