Carcharias acutus was named by Rüppell (1837). It is extant.

It was recombined as Carcharias (Prionodon) acutus by Chapman and Pritchard (1904); it was recombined as Rhizoprionodon acutus by Cappetta and Cavallo (2006), Lin et al. (2022).
