Blattellidae was named by Karny (1908). It is extant. Its type is Blattella.
It was reranked as the subfamily Blattellinae by Beccaloni (2007), Evangelista et al. (2017); it was synonymized subjectively with Ectobiidae by Vršanský et al. (2013).
It was assigned to Blattaria by Wappler (2003), Vršanský (2008); to Ectobiidae by Beccaloni (2007), Evangelista et al. (2017); to Orkrasomeria by Evangelista et al. (2021); and to Blaberoidea by Liu et al. (2023).
