Hister was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Histeridae, Histerinae.

It was assigned to Coleoptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Scopoli (1763), Müller (1764), Linnaeus (1767), Strøm (1768), Forster (1771), Müller (1776), Latreille (1796); to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775), Fabricius (1798); to Necrophagi by Latreille (1802); and to Histerini by Bouchard et al. (2011).
