Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
D. J. Froehlich 2002 (Arenahippus)The clade composed of Arenahippus and all more-derived equids is uniquely diagnosed by the presence of P4 posterior ridge moderate (Character 76, 0 to 1), premolar paralophid complex very short (Character 79, 1 to 0), and molar paracristid bend rounded (Character 88, 1 to 0). Some members of the group have a single medial cusp on the P2 (Character 21, 0 to 1), a moderate M3 hypolophids (Character 104, 0 to 1), a somewhat anterior P3 paraconule (Character 24, 0 to 1), molar metaconid twinned and equal in size (Character 83, 1 to 2), and lower molar metaconid separation large (Character 84, 0 to 1). The group lacks the synapomorphy of the next more-derived equid clade composed of Xenicohippus and more-derived equids, a crenulated M3 heel (Character 103, 0 to 1).
