Etisus was named by Milne-Edwards (1834) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Etisinae.
It was assigned to Chlorodinae by Dana (1851); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Xanthidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006), Tessier et al. (2011), Beschin et al. (2015), Beschin et al. (2016), Beschin et al. (2018); and to Etisinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2021).
