Lemur laniger was named by Gmelin (1788). It is extant.

It was recombined as Microrhynchus laniger by Jourdan (1834); it was recombined as Iropocus laniger by Gloger (1841); it was recombined as Avahi laniger by Jourdan (1834), Schwarz (1931).
