Triassothrips was named by Grimaldi and Fraser (2004). Its type is Triassothrips virginicus. It is the type genus of Triassothripidae.

It was assigned to Triassothripidae by Grimaldi and Fraser (2004), Mound and Hastenpflug-Vesmanis (2021).
