|---|---|---|
| P. A. Meylan et al. 2000 | Skull exhibiting such trionychoid features as extensive palatine contribution to braincase, reduction of foramen stapedio-temporale and absence of external process of pterygoid. It shares with members of the Trionychia (Carettochelyidae and Trionychidae) such features as absence of vomer-pterygoid contact, closed incisura columellae auris, tall coronoid and fusion of premaxillae. It differs from other members of the Trionychia in having an extensive skull roof that includes parietal-squamosal contact and postorbital squamosal contact, and also in having weak to moderate scute sulci and an enlarged foramen caroticum laterale. It differs from all known turtles in having very extensive development of a secondary palate, which includes a lateral contribution from the jugal, and in having pterygoids that extend posteriorly to meet on the midline posterior to the basisphenoid (Figs. 2B, 3B). |
