Subcyclotosaurus was named by Watson (1958). Its type is Subcyclotosaurus brookvalensis.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Schoch and Milner (2000).

It was assigned to Mastodonsauridae by Damiani (2001) and Poropat et al. (2023).
