Oxystomatini was named by Alonso-Zarazaga (1990). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Toxorhynchini by Legalov (2015); it was reranked as the subtribe Oxystomatina by Webster (2016).

It was assigned to Apionitae by Alonso-Zarazaga (1990), Legalov (2013); and to Apionini by Webster (2016).
