Cellepora was named by Linnaeus (1767) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Celleporidae.

It was assigned to Celleporidae by Ulrich and Bassler (1904), Brown (1952), Bassler (1953), Brown (1958); and to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002).
