Phoceana was named by Jullien (1903) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1260]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Phoceanidae.

It was assigned to Mucronellidae by Bassler (1953); to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phoceanidae by Gordon (2012).
