Cryptophagini was named by Kirby (1837). It is extant. Its type is Kryptophagus.

It was assigned to Cryptophaginae by Leschen (1996), Bouchard et al. (2011), Lyubarsky and Perkovsky (2011), Webster (2016), Lyubarsky and Perkovsky (2017), Peris et al. (2017), Lyubarsky and Perkovsky (2020), Lyubarsky and Perkovsky (2021).
