Virginiata was named by Amsden (1968). It is the type genus of Virginiatinae.

It was assigned to Trigonirhynchiinae by Jin and Chatterton (1997); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Virginiatinae by Williams et al. (2002).
