Katepensaurus was named by Ibiricu et al. (2013). Its type is Katepensaurus goicoecheai.
It was assigned to Rebbachisaurinae by Fanti et al. (2015); to Rebbachisauridae by Ibiricu et al. (2013), Paulina-Carabajal and Calvo (2021); to Limaysaurinae by Ibiricu et al. (2015), Lerzo et al. (2024); and to Rebbachisauridae by Mannion et al. (2019), Mannion and Moore (2025).
