Phlaeothrips was named by Halliday (1836). It is extant. It is the type genus of Phlaeothripidae, Phlaeothripinae.

It was corrected as Phloeothrips by Mound and Hastenpflug-Vesmanis (2021).

It was assigned to Phlaeothripidae by Mound (1968); to Phloeothripidae by Shmakov and Perkovsky (2009); and to Phlaeothripinae by Schliephake (2001), Mound and Hastenpflug-Vesmanis (2021).
