Heliospongia was named by Girty (1908) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-l P Leon-l Sepkoski's reference number: 203,204]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Heliospongiidae.
It was assigned to Haplosclerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Heliospongiidae by Finks et al. (2004).
