Protagrionidae was named by Handlirsch (1906). It is not extant. Its type is Protagrion.

It was corrected as Protagriidae by Prokop and Ren (2007).

It was assigned to Protodonata by Handlirsch (1906), Handlirsch (1919), Handlirsch (1922), Martynov (1930); to Palaeodictyoptera by Carpenter (1943); and to Eugereonoidea by Prokop and Ren (2007).
