Taxonomy
Aspidaster was named by de Loriol (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath T Dani]. It is not extant. Its type is Aspidaster delgadoi. It was considered monophyletic by Villier et al. (2004).
It was assigned to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stauranderasteridae by Spencer and Wright (1966), Villier et al. (2004), Villier (2010).
