Bostrichus was named by Geoffroy (1762). It is extant. It is the type genus of Bostrichoidea, Bostrichidae, Bostrichinae.
It was assigned to Coleoptera by Geoffroy (1762), Schaeffer (1766), Latreille (1796); to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775), Fabricius (1787), Fabricius (1792), Fabricius (1798); to Bostrichini by Latreille (1802); and to Bostrichini by Bouchard et al. (2011).
