Goniocidaris was named by Desor, in Agassiz & Desor (1846) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Goniocidarina.

It was assigned to Cidaroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Goniocidarinae by Fell (1966), Smith (2009).
