Clangula was named by Leach (1819). It is extant. Its type is Anas clangula.
It was assigned to Anseres by Shufeldt (1891); to Fuligulinae by Hay (1930); to Nyrocinae by Wetmore (1940); to Aythyinae by Wetmore (1956); to Anatidae by Hay (1902), Clements et al. (2017); and to Mergini by Gonzalez et al. (2009), Watanabe et al. (2020).
