Taxonomy
Astrapotherium symmetrum was named by Ameghino (1902). Its type specimen is MACN A 52-507a, a tooth (isolated lower incisor), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Parastrapotherium symmetrum by Kramarz and Bond (2010).
