Moythomasia was named by Gross (1950) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife D Fame Sepkoski's reference number: 2,502,916]. It is not extant. Its type is Aldingeria perforata.

It was assigned to Moythomasiidae by Kazantseva (1971); to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Actinopteri by Choo (2015).
