Ceramurus was named by Egerton (1845) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,452,863]. Its type is Ceramurus macrocephalus.

It was assigned to Pholidophoridae by Woodward (1895), Woodward (1919); and to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
