Taxonomy
Prototomus viverrinus was named by Cope (1874) [genotype]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Arroyo Blanco (Cope), which is in a Wasatchian terrestrial horizon in the San Jose Formation of New Mexico.
It was recombined as Stypolophus viverrinus by Cope (1877), Hay (1902); it was recombined as Sinopa viverrinus by Scott (1892); it was recombined as Sinopa viverrina by Matthew (1901), Matthew (1909), Matthew and Granger (1915), Simpson (1951).
