Spirinchus was named by Jordan and Evermann (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Osmeriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Osmeridae by Uyeno and Sakamoto (1999) and Fierstine et al. (2012).
