Holocentrus was named by Gronovius (1763) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was corrected as Holocentrum by de Beaufort (1926).

It was assigned to Percoidei by Agassiz (1835); to Berycidae by de Beaufort (1926); to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Holocentridae by Nolf and Steurbaut (1983), Stringer (1998), Schwarzhans (2007).
