Murex multicostatus was named by Eschscholtz (1829). It is extant.

It was recombined as Trophon (Boreotrophon) multicostatus by Arnold (1903); it was recombined as Trophon (Neptunea) multicostata by Oldroyd (1925); it was recombined as Trophonopsis multicostatus by Addicott (1966); it was recombined as Boreotrophon multicostatus by Woodring and Bramlette (1950), Hendy (2021).
