Lophochelys was named by Zangerl (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l K Camp-u]. Its type is Lophochelys natatrix.

It was assigned to Toxochelyidae by Carroll (1988); to Lophocheliinae by Weems (1988); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lophochelyinae by Zangerl (1953), Thurmond and Jones (1981), Weems (2014).
