Syllomus was named by Cope (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 504]. It is not extant. Its type is Syllomus crispatus.
It was assigned to Thalassemydidae by Hay (1902); to Syllominae by Weems (1988); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cheloniidae by Cope (1896), Hay (1930), Berry and Lynn (1936), Carroll (1988), Hirayama (1995), Zug (2001), Hastings and Dooley (2017).
