Derivatio nominis: From the Greek word thalassa ( sea)

Taxonomy
Bairdemys thalassica was named by Ferreira et al. (2015). Its type specimen is IVIC-P-2908, a partial skull (almost complete skull, lacking the pre-orbital region, the right portion of the skull roof, and the right lateral wall of the fossa temporalis), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is El Miedo Cave, which is in a Miocene shallow subtidal limestone in the Capadare Formation of Venezuela.
