Taxonomy
Astarte lapidis was named by Packard (1922). Its type specimen is UCMP 12285 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCMP loc. 2135, Santa Ana Mountains, which is in a Campanian marine horizon in the Williams Formation of California.
It was recombined as Eriphyla lapidis by Popenoe (1937), Anderson (1958).

Anterior dorsal margin concave, set off by an ill-defined lunule; anterior end and base rounded, forming nearly a segment of a circle; posterior dorsal margin convex, meeting the even curve of the base and the posterior end at a point about halfway to the ventral margin. Beaks in conspicuous, pointed. Shell thick, ornamented by rough lines of growth. Hinge plate heavy with a prominent, anterior, cardinal tooth. Length of type, 20 mm.; height, 20 mm.; convexity, 8 mm. |
