Leptodelphis was named by Kirpichnikov (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Leptodelphis stavropolitanus.
It was assigned to Delphinidae by Kirpichnikov (1954); to Kentriodontinae by Barnes (1978), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Pithanodelphinae by de Muizon (1988), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Pithanodelphininae by Marx et al. (2016); and to Kentriodontidae by Barnes (1985), Carroll (1988), Benton (1993), Ichishima et al. (1995), Berta (2017).
