Taxonomy
Loxolithax was named by Kellogg (1931) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m]. It is not extant. Its type is Loxolithax sinuosa. It was considered monophyletic by Barnes (1984).

It was assigned to Delphinidae by Kellogg (1931), Simpson (1945) and Wilson (1973); to Phocoenoidinae by Barnes (1984); to Delphinoidea by de Muizon (1988); to Phocaenidae by Carroll (1988); to Autoceta by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Phocoeninae by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Kentriodontidae by Kazár (2006); and to Phocoenidae by Barnes (1977), Uhen et al. (2008) and Berta (2017).
