Taxonomy
Protomelanitta gracilis was named by Zelenkov (2011). Its type specimen is PIN, no. 4869/151, a limb element (proximal end of the left humerus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sharga 2, which is in a Serravallian terrestrial horizon in the Oshin Formation of Mongolia.
