Phocaenopsis was named by Huxley (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l]. Its type is Phocaenopsis mantelli.
It was synonymized subjectively with Acrodelphis by Zittel (1925); it was considered a nomen dubium by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001).
It was assigned to Delphinidae by Trouessart (1904), Palmer (1904) and Kellogg (1928); to Odontoceti by Fordyce (1980) and Fordyce (1981); to Phocaenidae by Simpson (1945) and Carroll (1988); to Rhabdosteidae by Benton (1993) and McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Huxley (1859) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Eurhinodelphinidae by Fordyce and Roberts (2009), Ortega and Fordyce (2009) and Berta (2017).
