Fuligula affinis was named by Eyton (1838) [This isn't quite right. Eyton named the species, but did not place it in the genus Aythya.

It was recombined as Marila affinis by Hay (1930); it was recombined as Nyroca affinis by Wetmore (1931), Miller and DeMay (1942); it was recombined as Nyroca (Fulix) affinis by Wetmore (1940); it was recombined as Aythya affinis by Wetmore (1956), Brodkorb and Phillips (1973), Emslie (1992), Parmalee (1992), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Steadman et al. (2003), Broughton (2004), Guthrie (2010), Clements et al. (2017).
