Taxonomy
Mergus miscellus was named by Alvarez and Olson (1978). Its type specimen is USNM 237150, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Stratford Bluffs, Zone 12-13, which is in a Langhian marine horizon in the Calvert Formation of Virginia.
