Placoziphius was named by Van Beneden (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u]. It is not extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Mioziphius by Zittel (1925); it was considered a nomen nudum by Palmer (1904).
It was assigned to Ziphiidae by Gill (1872); to Ziphiinae by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904); to Physeterinae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Kazár (2002); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Physeteroidea by Lambert (2008); to Physeteridae by Abel (1905), Abel (1919), Kellogg (1928), Marx et al. (2016), Collareta et al. (2017); and to Panphyseteroidea by Velez-Juarbe et al. (2015), Berta (2017).
