Taxonomy

Prosqualodon was named by Lydekker (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l]. Its type is Prosqualodon australis. It was considered monophyletic by Muizon (1987) and Geisler et al. (2011).

It was replaced with Postsqualodon by Stromer (1908).

It was assigned to Agorophiidae by Abel (1914) and Abel (1919); to Squalodontoidea by Fordyce (1980); to Platanistoidea by Muizon (1990) and Muizon (1994); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Squalodontidae by Lydekker (1894), Trouessart (1898), Ameghino (1901), Trouessart (1904), Palmer (1904), True (1907), True (1910), Winge (1921), Flynn (1923), Miller (1923), Zittel (1925), Kellogg (1928), Simpson (1945), Keyes (1973), Whitmore and Sanders (1977), Fordyce (1981), Muizon (1987), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Geisler and Sanders (2003) and Uhen (2005); to Prosqualodontidae by Cozzuol (1996), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Fitzgerald (2004), Uhen (2008), Marx et al. Synonyms

Postsqualodon was named by Stromer (1908) [stated in a footnote].

It was synonymized subjectively with Prosqualodon by Kellogg (1923).

It was assigned to Squalodontidae by Stromer (1908).
Prioinia was named by True (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Kellogg (1928).

It was synonymized subjectively with Prosqualodon by Cozzuol (2010); it was considered a nomen dubium by de Muizon (1988); it was corrected as Proinia by True (1910), Rovereto (1915), Kellogg (1928), Simpson (1945), Carroll (1988), Benton (1993), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Geisler et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Iniinae by Rovereto (1915) and Simpson (1945); to Platanistidae by Carroll (1988); to Iniidae by True (1910), Kellogg (1928), Benton (1993) and McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Odontoceti by Geisler et al. (2012).
