Sarmatodelphis was named by Kirpichnikov (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Sarmatodelphis moldavicus. It was considered monophyletic by Marx et al. (2016).
It was assigned to Delphinidae by Kirpichnikov (1954); to Kentriodontinae by Barnes (1978), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Pithanodelphinae by Kazár and Grigorescu (2005); to Pithanodelphininae by Marx et al. (2016); and to Kentriodontidae by Barnes (1985), de Muizon (1988), Carroll (1988), Benton (1993), Ichishima et al. (1995), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Berta (2017).
