Enhydriodon was named by Falconer (1868) [type Indian E. sivalensis].
It was assigned to Enhydrini by Willemsen (1992); to Carnivora by Sepkoski (2002); to Mustelidae by Falconer (1868), Carroll (1988) and Geraads et al. (2004); to Enhydriodontini by Pickford (2007); and to Lutrinae by Crusafont-Pairo and Golpe (1962), Hendey (1974), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Wang et al. (2018).
