Peltostega was named by Wiman (1916). It is not extant. Its type is Peltostega erici.
It was assigned to Rhytidosteidae by Cosgriff and Zawiskie (1979), Carroll (1988) and Marsicano and Warren (1998); to Peltosteginae by Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Trematosauroidea by Warren and Black (1985) and Schoch (2013).
