Califostoma rotundivaricosum was named by Bean and Vermeij (2016). Its type specimen is SDSNH 137443,, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is SDNHM 4411 - Rancho Del Rey, which is in a Piacenzian marine horizon in the San Diego Formation of California.
