Sauropleura was named by Cope (1868). It is not extant. Its type is Sauropleura digitata. It is the type genus of Sauropleuridae.
It was assigned to Sauropleuridae by Hay (1902) and Moodie (1916); to Urocordylidae by Carroll (1988); to Sauropleurinae by Carroll et al. (1998); and to Nectridea by Maddin et al. (2012).
